Gum Disease Therapy

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a very common condition that affects not only your mouth but also your overall health.  Recent scientific evidence suggests that gum disease is related to other conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.

Gum disease is a chronic infection in the gums and bone that surround the teeth caused by bacteria that thrive below the gums.  Like high blood pressure, there are often no major symptoms to gum disease until it is too late.  If your gums are red, puffy, bleed when you brush, or if you have chronic bad breath, ask your dentist or hygienist whether you have gum disease.

Initial treatment of gum disease involves professional cleanings.  The hygienist will use special instruments and untrasonic cleaners to remove the bacteria and toxins from deep below the gumline.  The hygienist will also give you instructions on how to care for your teeth and gums at home.  Regular care is essential to prevent progression of the disease and to evaluate how well your mouth is responding to treatment.  In some cases, additional treatments may be required and it is important that you have the opportunity to discuss with the dentist which option is best for you.

Untreated, the gums remain irritated and the foundation and support for the teeth start to break down, eventually loosening the teeth.  Untreated gum disease is the #1 cause of tooth loss in adults – let’s work together to keep your natural teeth for as long as possible.
