Nov 19, 2009 - NY Times: Implants are the standard of care

A writer for the New York Times reports on his personal experience with dental implants. Through his research and experience, he concludes what dentists have known for years:
“In an overwhelming majority of cases, implants to replace lost teeth are by far the best long-term solution for maintaining a healthy mouth. Also, because they rarely need to be replaced, in the long run they are more economical than bridges.”
Read the rest of the article here. An implant is almost always the most effective, comfortable, and longest lasting method to replace a missing tooth. If you have lost a tooth and now you can’t chew on that side, or if you have an old bridge that you are worried might not last, ask us if implants are a good option for you.

June 8, 2009 - Looking for a Father’s Day gift?

This is probably the strangest looking electric toothbrush available. The 40 Second Toothbrush claims to reduce the time needed to brush your teeth by 66%. It oscillates 810 times per minute along both your top and bottom teeth at the same time. This thing looks so powerful Dad won’t know whether to use it to brush his teeth or wash his car!
But don’t buy into the marketing hype. There is no toothbrush that is “better” than another, whether it is manual, electric, or sonic. The effectiveness of a toothbrush is determined by the person holding it, so use whatever toothbrush works best for you.
Keeping your mouth and smile healthy is simple - brush, floss, and see your dentist regularly for cleanings and maintenance.
May 20, 2009 - “Mom, I’m not playing video games, I’m studying!”

A group of dental students at the University of Glasgow recently won the Dental Innovation Technology Ideas Award. Their idea involved a Nintendo Wii, modified wireless controllers to simulate dental instruments, and a virtual patient. The idea shows promise as a way for students and maybe even dentists to practice new procedures outside of the mouth. Research has previously linked certain types of video games with increased visual skills, including surgeons performing meticulous procedures.
There will never be a complete substitute for first hand experience on a live patient, but this seems to be another step in the natural progression towards virtual training. After all, no patient wants to be the guinea pig the first time your dentist tries a new procedure!
May 13, 2009 - Young athletes are at high risk of concussions. Does your child wear a mouthguard?

The following is an excerpt from a May 2009 article in USA Today:
“Concussions account for almost one in 10 sports injuries, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and for young people ages 15-24, sports are second only to motor vehicle accidents as the leading cause of brain injury.”
http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2009-05-04-concussions_N.htm
All athletes participating in a contact sport including soccer, football, basketball, and hockey, should wear a mouthguard. Contrary to what you might think, sports mouthguards are not designed to protect the teeth. They are intended to cushion the force from trauma to the jaw area, protecting your child’s brain from the intense shock and risk of concussion.
Store bought mouthguards are usually of the “boil-and-bite” variety. They are often poorly sized and fitted, resulting in discomfort, gagging, and interference with speech, not to mention inadequate concussion protection. A professionally made mouthguard will provide better protection and also be more comfortable for your child. Comfort is key - after all, a mouthguard is no good if your child won’t wear it. Come see us to have a mouthguard custom fit and designed for your child’s mouth.
